Keep reading to find out how to keep your skin smooth and bump-free post waxing.
Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate!
Ingrown hairs form below the surface of the skin. The hair curls as it grows, however is trapped, so the immune system treats it as a foreign invader, attacking it and causing redness and irritation. Exfoliation is key to avoid ingrowns. Just a few times a week should be enough. We love and highly recommend Crystal Peel Microdermabrasion Exfoliating Soap. Which are sold here at the spa! They keep skin smooth and soft for days and can be used up to once daily. Using a loofah to exfoliate between waxing appointments is a good idea also! You can use one to gentle scrub in the direction of the hair growth. Better yet, shower with a salicylic acid based shower gel twice a week to add an extra layer of exfoliation.
Trust Pia Spa, We're the Experts
We use different types of wax! Soft wax adheres to your skin, while hard wax grabs the hair as it hardens, making it less likely to aggravate your skin. We choose depending on your specific skin and hair type. Always leave your waxing needs to us, especially when it comes to your bikini line! This is very detailed work that should be left to the pro's. Trust me, I've seen it all, from bruising to burns from botched “DIY” waxing jobs people tried at home. We know exactly how to apply and strip your hair from the skin to pull the hair from the root, as opposed to breaking at the skin. This technique prevents ingrown hairs from forming.
After-Care Advice
Treating your skin with love post wax is key to preventing ingrown. First, always moisturize liberally! By keeping your skin hydrated you allow the new hair growth to grow from the follicle through the skin, rather than becoming trapped. Also, always avoid trips to the sauna or steam room, and working out, immediately following your waxing appointment. If possible, wait 24 hours. Sweat causes bacteria to breed and your follicles are much more open in the 12 hours following a wax. Similarly, workout clothes can be tight, irritating the fresh skin that exposed.
Play it safe with these tips and you'll be free of painful, red ingrown hairs in no time!
